Downtime caused by DDoS Attacks
Over the past 7 days we have had quite a few DDoS attacks on the server. Unfortunately there isn’t really anything we can do about it. We are a non-profit server, we don’t accept donations of any kind so there is no money for attackers to get at, they just do it for attention.
A few of you have asked us what a DDoS attack is, how does it work? Well the attacker simply commands lots of computers (hundreds or thousands) to all send our server data. The data they send is combined higher than our line speed and so it clogs up the connection. Legitimate players like yourselves cannot connect because there’s simply no more room in the pipe to accept your data while the attack is ongoing.
Here is a graphic illustration from CloudFlare explaining how a DDoS happens on a website, it’s exactly the same just with our game server instead of a website being the victim.
The good news is, these kinds of attacks are very basic and do not compromise security. It’s literally just like calling someone’s telephone thousands of times over and over again so that you cannot use the phone yourself. As soon as the attack ends, service resumes as normal. No hardware is damaged, no information is stolen, nothing gets hacked.
Thank you for your understanding and patience.
