As I’m sure many of you have noticed when our Survival server used to restart it could sometimes take over 5 minutes. This was due to Towny. Its database was ginormous having held data for tens of thousands of players since April 2012.
Recently to help stop the constant data corruptions of the Towny database we purged old data, meaning players who hadn’t logged in for 1 year were removed from the Towny database.
This has had a positive effect on our rebooting speed. Where it used to take over 5 minutes to restart it now takes just 52 seconds. I’m really happy about this and combined with our automatic restarting system that only restarts the server during times of low player activity it means you’re much less likely to see a restart or be frustrated by how long it takes.
To monitor the server restart speed I simply used IRC. CraftIRC is the plugin we use to connect to our IRC server for outside-game chat and it’s the last plugin to activate when the server first boots up making it a great way to test launch speed.
Today I’ve added a new collective stat for each player which shows you how much you’ve spent and profited over your entire use of the investing system. This covers not only your running investments but past ones that have expired.
When clicking on the Investments button in the top left of the Admin Shop you’ll find a new little box at the bottom, to be clear though this will only appear once you’ve had at least one investment expire so it may not be there yet. This is what that box looks like:
It will combine both your currently running investments and your past investments into a total spent/profit view. I’ve added this so that it’ll be easier for players to gauge how they are doing outside of their running investments so you can get a “big picture” overview.
Now that you’ve all had a taste of item investing it’s time to iterate and improve the usability. Now when you access the shop you’ll see an Investments button next to the Options & Log button. When pressed you’ll see a menu like so:
It shows you each investment, how much profit you’ve made, how much time you have left and a total summary of how much you’ve spent and earned. I hope you like this new feature I’m sure it will be very useful.
One of the things many players say to me is that the economy on our server needs a lot of active participation. This can be a hindrance to actually playing because you may only have a few hours a week to play due to school and other commitments.
And as we all know, without cash your experience on the server may turn in to a grind of never ending material collection instead of building things.
This is where our new feature item investing comes in. It allows you to select an item on the Admin Shop and then invest some money into it for a seven day period. We allow you to invest 5, 10, 15, 20 and 25% in each item so you can select how much risk you want to put in to a particular item. Once you’ve done this you’ll receive a cut of every sale of that item until the seven days are up.
While invested you can select the item and see how you’re doing, how many of that item sold that day/week/month and also how much profit you’ve made on your invested amount. As I said above each item can be invested in five times for five different amounts. That means five separate players could invest in one item,
or just one player could invest in all the five available amounts. (See Edit Below)
When your investment ends you’ll receive an in-game message or mail (if you’re offline) which lets you know that your investment on a particular item has ended and how much profit you made during that time.
To receive your money from your investments at any time (you don’t need to wait until they end) you simply type /payme in-game. Like our other money generating features that use Payme you’ll see a breakdown of exactly how much money you received from your investments.
I hope you all enjoy this feature, it’s a great way for you to make some money from the Admin Shop. Of course there is always the risk that nobody will buy what you’ve invested in but that’s where you’ll need to use your noodle and figure out what’s selling and where there is money to be made.
EDIT:// To keep the system fairer and to stop one player from gobbling up every available investment slot on all the best items in the store (cough jackerdelta) I’m changing the way the investing works so that you can now only invest in one of the five available percentage amounts on each item. Anyone who invested before this change was made will not lose their investments, they will play out as normal.
We suffered a three hour internet outage today which made our game servers inaccessible. As of this post the internet access to the server has been restored and the game servers are accessible.
